Practical, current guidance for reducing wildfire smoke indoors—from portable HEPA air cleaners to HVAC filtration and a cleaner-air room.
Wildfire smoke can travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometres, affecting Whistler’s air quality even when the fire itself is far from the community. Because the timing, duration and direction of smoke are unpredictable, preparing your home before wildfire season can make it easier to create cleaner indoor air when conditions deteriorate.
The main health concern in wildfire smoke is fine particulate matter known as PM2.5. These particles are small enough to travel deep into the lungs and may enter the bloodstream. Smoke can affect anyone, but children, older adults, pregnant people and people with heart or lung conditions—including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease—face greater risk.
The practical goal is not to make a home completely airtight during a smoke event. It is to reduce smoke entering the building, filter the indoor air effectively, avoid creating additional indoor pollution and maintain a safe indoor temperature.

Preparing the building envelope and filtration systems before smoke arrives can help protect indoor air quality.
Prepare Your Whistler Home Before Wildfire Season
Wildfire smoke preparation is most effective when completed before filters and air cleaners are in high demand. Start by understanding how outdoor air enters your home and how your heating, cooling and ventilation systems operate.
Reduce uncontrolled outdoor-air leakage
During a smoke event, close windows and exterior doors. Inspect weatherstripping, caulking and other obvious gaps around windows and doors, and repair damaged seals. Older, poorly sealed windows may allow more outdoor air to enter; replacement may be worth considering when the windows are already deteriorated or part of a planned Whistler home renovation.
Window replacement should not be presented as an emergency smoke solution by itself. Air leakage can also occur through doors, exhaust openings, penetrations and other parts of the building envelope, so the home should be assessed as a system.
Learn how your mechanical system works
Homes in Whistler do not all use the same mechanical systems. A home may have forced-air heating, a heat pump, an HRV or ERV, air conditioning, or a combination of systems. Before smoke arrives, determine:
- Whether the system draws in outdoor air
- Whether it has a recirculation setting
- Which filter sizes and efficiency ratings it supports
- How frequently its filters should be inspected and replaced
- Whether changes to ventilation controls require a qualified technician
Do not permanently disable ventilation or alter mechanical equipment without professional guidance. When the smoke clears, outdoor air may need to be brought back in so pollutants and excess carbon dioxide do not remain trapped indoors.
Create a Cleaner-Air Room
A practical household smoke plan begins with one room where family members can spend time when outdoor air quality is poor. A bedroom or living area with a door, limited air leakage and enough space for the people using it can work well.
Keep windows and doors closed, reduce time entering and leaving, and operate a portable air cleaner continuously at a setting that occupants can tolerate. The room should remain comfortably cool; overheating can also present a health risk.
Choose a properly sized portable HEPA air cleaner
Portable air cleaners equipped with a true HEPA filter can reduce fine particles from wildfire smoke. Select a unit using its smoke Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR—not marketing language alone.
Health Canada recommends enough filtered airflow to clean approximately two to three room volumes per hour. Larger rooms, open floor plans and leakier homes may require more than one unit. Keep the air cleaner away from curtains, furniture and walls that could block its intake or outlet.
Avoid ozone generators. Health Canada advises against using them in homes because ozone can harm health. If an electronic air cleaner is being considered, look for independent testing showing that it produces little or no ozone.
Use HVAC Filtration Safely
If your home has a compatible forced-air HVAC system, a higher-efficiency filter can help reduce fine particles throughout the home. MERV ratings describe how effectively a filter captures particles of different sizes.
Consider MERV 13—but confirm compatibility first
Health Canada recommends MERV 13 or higher for removing fine particulate matter when the system can accommodate it. However, a more efficient filter can create greater resistance to airflow. Installing a filter that the equipment cannot handle may reduce performance or strain the system.
Check the equipment manufacturer’s requirements or ask a qualified HVAC professional for the highest appropriate rating. The filter must also fit securely; air that bypasses gaps around it is not being filtered.
Use recirculation when outdoor air is smoky
Where the system permits, use recirculation mode when outdoor air quality is poor to reduce the amount of smoky air intentionally drawn indoors. Return the system to its normal ventilation operation when conditions improve, following the manufacturer’s or technician’s instructions.
Inspect filters and keep replacements available
Smoke can load filters more quickly than normal household use. Keep the correct replacement filter available before wildfire season, inspect it during prolonged smoke events and replace it when required by its condition, the manufacturer’s instructions or your HVAC professional.
Avoid Making Indoor Air Quality Worse
Outdoor smoke is not the only source of fine particles indoors. During a wildfire smoke event:
- Do not smoke or vape indoors
- Avoid candles, incense and wood-burning fireplaces
- Limit frying, broiling and other cooking that creates smoke or particles
- Use a range hood when cooking if outdoor conditions and the home’s ventilation strategy permit
- Wet-mop or wipe surfaces instead of stirring settled dust into the air
- If vacuuming is necessary, use a well-maintained vacuum with a HEPA filter
- Never operate a fuel-powered generator, barbecue or other combustion equipment indoors, in a garage or near an air intake
Vacuuming with a HEPA-filtered machine can help capture settled particles, but it is not a substitute for continuous air filtration and may temporarily disturb dust. If indoor particle levels are already high, wet cleaning is often the better immediate option.
Monitor Whistler Air Quality
Conditions can change quickly with wind and fire activity. Check the BC Air Quality monitoring network, the Air Quality Health Index and current air-quality warnings before opening windows or planning outdoor activity.
British Columbia also provides an air-quality subscription service for email or text notifications. Whistler is included among the communities and forecast regions covered by the service.
An indoor PM2.5 monitor can also help show whether your filtration strategy is working. Consumer sensors are not a substitute for official monitoring or medical advice, but changes in indoor readings can reveal an open door, an overloaded filter or an air cleaner that is too small for the space.
Protect Your Health During Wildfire Smoke
When the air is smoky, reduce strenuous outdoor activity and pay attention to how you feel. The harder you breathe, the more smoke particles you inhale. If you must spend time outside, HealthLink BC advises considering a properly fitted respirator.
Milder effects can include irritated eyes, a runny nose, sore throat, cough, wheezing and headache. People with asthma, COPD or heart disease may notice worsening of their usual symptoms.
Seek medical guidance if symptoms are concerning or do not improve after reducing exposure. Call 9-1-1 for a medical emergency, including severe difficulty breathing or chest pain. For non-emergency health advice in British Columbia, call 8-1-1.
If the home becomes too hot with its windows closed, or indoor air cannot be kept cleaner than outside, consider spending time in a library, shopping centre, community facility or another air-conditioned cleaner-air space.
A Practical Wildfire-Smoke Checklist
- Check and repair obvious gaps around windows and exterior doors
- Learn how the home’s HVAC and ventilation systems manage outdoor air
- Confirm the highest compatible HVAC filter rating
- Keep at least one correct replacement HVAC filter on hand
- Choose a properly sized portable HEPA air cleaner using smoke CADR
- Identify one room that can serve as a cleaner-air space
- Maintain working smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms
- Bookmark official Whistler air-quality information and subscribe for warnings
- Know where to go if the home becomes smoky or too hot
