Take a Hike! You Don’t Have to Drive to Get Out of Town

There is a reason that British Columbia is known for hiking. You can take advantage of a well-traveled network of hikes that spread out from the lookouts atop Whistler Mountain. Take a gondola ride above the tree line and enjoy the spectacular alpine wildflower season. These trails include fantastic day-hikes to Garibaldi Lake, Cheakamus Lake, and Wedgemount Lake. And you’ll never even have to get in the car to get away!

Go for a Golfing Getaway

Celebrity-designed courses are another way to get away without driving anything more complicated than a golf cart. Try out these Pacific Northwest fairways that are set amid a lush landscape of stately conifers and small lakes with a mountain backdrop. Among your options are the Arnold Palmer-designed Whistler Golf Club and the Jack Nicklaus North Golf Course.

 

Find Lost Lake

Whether you’re motivated to mountain bike, bird watch, or simply explore the outdoors, you can find what you’re looking for at Lost Lake. Take a shuttle from the village to the lakeshore and discover plenty of British Columbia wildlife as you explore the trails. You can enjoy the beach at the lake in warmer weather. And if you’re craving more sandy, freshwater beaches near Whistler you can head to Alpha Lake and Alta Lake.

Be a Day Tripper!

One option for a great day trip is to head out to Squamish. This quaint old logging town is spectacularly situated at the head of Howe Sound. And while the loggers are long gone you can take your choice from a number of outdoor activities that include rock-climbing, hiking, and mountain biking. The town is located on Highway 99 (the Sea-to-Sky Highway), an easy drive from Whistler. You can visit Shannon Falls Provincial Park—home to the third highest falls in British Columbia. It’s only a five-minute walk from the parking lot! Or you can marvel at the granite monolith at Stawamus Chief Provincial ParkThe hike is a bit more challenging but worth the effort.

 

A day trip to Pemberton (located northeast of Whistler) is another option if you’re traveling on Highway 99. This settlement offers you a wide variety of spring and summer outdoor activities, such as golfing and mountain biking in summer. And you may even want to come back for heli-skiing and snowmobiling in winter! This area is largely uninhabited, with glacier-fed lakes and mountains surrounding the valleys. It’s a great destination if your goal is to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  While there, you might want to take a quick side trip to Nairn Falls Provincial Park, to watch the Green River tumble into a series of spectacular roaring waterfalls.

 

Romantic Getaways

Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention at least one romantic getaway. For partners who what to indulge themselves in some of the finer things life has to offer, nothing beats a stay at one of the luxury hotels in Whistler’s Upper Village. You might enjoy the Fairmont Chateau Whistler or the Four Seasons Whistler. Relax and be pampered at one of the local spas and then enjoy a leisurely walk along the Village Stroll.
